Milos Raonic of Canada defeated Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 7-6 6-4 in the second round of the Paris masters. The fourth seed fired off 16 aces to the Spaniard’s five.
Raonic, who won both their previous encounters, had a bye into the second round while Carreno beat Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-1 in the first round.
The Canadian, ranked fifth in the world, will next play either 16th seed Pablo Cuevas or Paolo Lorenzi.
Earlier, seventh seed Tomas Berdych beat unseeded Joao Sousa . 2005 Paris champion Berdych has qualified for the tour finals on six straight occasions, but this year must reach the masters semi-finals for any chance of competing in London in December.
Sousa beat qualifier Andreas Seppi of Italy 6-4 6-4 in first round.
