Typhoon Meranti wreaks havoc in Fujian

Super Typhoon Meranti has wreaked havoc as it landed in southeast China’s Fujian Province, but city traffic is resuming in downtown areas amid receding floodwater.

Various parts of the Fujian Province have been battered by strong winds and heavy downpours brought along by Meranti, the world’s strongest typhoon so far this year. Thousands of troops are deployed to the affected areas for rescue and relief work.

The typhoon has caused serious damages to trees as well as water-supply facilities in the province, and about 2.6 million households have suffered blackouts as of midday Thursday.

By late Thursday, however, power supply are resumed for about one million of the affected households.

Traffic in most downtown parts in coastal cities of Xiamen, Fuzhou and Quanzhou have resumed as floodwater have receded from these areas.

Relevant departments have been busy clearing uprooted trees and broken tree branches from upon city roads.

Meranti made landfall in the Xiang’an District of Xiamen early on Thursday. It is the strongest one hitting the Fujian Province since the local meteorological agency started to keep records in 1949.
