Normal life affected as Curfew continues in Kashmir

Curfew-like restrictions continued to cripple normal life in Indian Kashmir on Thursday (September 15) amid simmering tensions over civilian deaths in clashes with security forces.

Kashmir is in the middle of the worst unrest in six years that began on July 08 when security forces killed a young separatist commander Burhan Wani, who was idolised by some youth, provoking an outpouring of anger.

Roads largely remained deserted and heavy security remained in place as army and paramilitary personnel patrolled the streets of Srinagar, the summer capital of the state.

Curfew was re-imposed in the Valley on Tuesday (September 13), after a brief respite, in the view of a protest march call given by joint separatist leadership.

At least 78 people, including security personnel, have been killed and more than 6,000 wounded in the violence so far.

In the latest incident, two persons were killed in clashes with security forces in Bandipora district on Tuesday (September 13) soon after Eid prayers were offered.

Large swathes of Kashmir have remained shut for more than two months due to curfew imposed by government and shutdown call given by separatists.

Kashmir is at the centre of a decades-old rivalry between India and Pakistan, which rules a northwestern section of the divided region, and backed an insurgency in the late 1980s and 1990s that Indian security forces largely crushed.
