Kerber Defeats Pliskova To Win U.S. Open

Germany’s second seeded Angelique Kerber beat Czech Karolina Pliskova 6-3 4-6 6-4 to win the U.S. Open final, and collect her second grand slam title of the year. Kerber celebrated her coronation battling past the 10th seeded Czech in two hours and seven minutes on a steamy Arthur Ashe stadium court. The German got off to the perfect start, breaking a sloppy Pliskova in the first game before breaking again at the end of the set to take the first set 6-3. Pliskova came back strong in the second set and broke Kerber with a delightful lob to claw herself back into the game in her first appearance at a grand slam final. Pliskova put herself in a solid position to win a first title when she broke Kerber early in the final set, but Kerber showed the strong mentality that has aided her rise to the top of the rankings and fought back to break back and level the set. At 4-5 in the third set, Pliskova crumbled and handed Kerber three championship points. A long shot by Pliskova ensured Kerber won the match and the title.
