Geniez Wins 3rd Stage But Fernandez Takes Red Jersey

Alexandre Geniez of France, unzipped jersey flapping, toiled up the steep climb to the stage three finish of the Vuelta of Spain cycle race. The 176 kilometer stage from Marin to the Mirador Ezaro vantage point ended with one of the steepest final climbs to feature in stage races. The Frenchman crossed the finish line 21 seconds in front a chasing Ruben Fernandez of Spain, who takes over the red jersey of overall leader. Three riders with hopes of overall victory in the Vuelta were next up, finishing together behind Fernandez. Alejandro Valverde of Spain, Esteban Chaves of Colombia and tour de France winner Chris Froome of Great Britain were 26 seconds behind Geniez. Froome had suddenly appeared on the final climb, having attacked and left Nairo Quintana, another contender for overall victory, six seconds behind him. In the general classification, Fernandez leads by seven seconds with his team mate Valverde second. Froome is third, 11 seconds behind Fernandez, and Chaves and Quintana are 17 seconds behind.
